In a tragic turn of events in Powder Springs, authorities have reported a domestic shooting that resulted in the death of an elderly couple. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, the incident occurred at a residence on Yoshino Terrace where two victims, both approximately 75 years old, were discovered with gunshot wounds. Initially taken to the hospital in critical condition, they succumbed to their injuries. The shooter, a 31-year-old man who also lived in the house, was taken into custody.
Following the arrest, Powder Springs police revealed the identity of the victims as 72-year-old Monica Brookins and 73-year-old John Wells, as well as that of the suspected shooter, Martin Duberry, the couple's son and stepson. Duberry now faces multiple charges, including two counts of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. According to a neighborhood resident who lives across the street, Sanaa Pygatt, she observed "a man coming his house with his hands up, and then officers had their guns drawn," she told Atlanta News First in an interview.
The peace of the area was shattered by this violent confrontation. Cerla Long, another resident of the community, stressed the unusual nature of such violence in their neighborhood, saying, "It’s very quiet over here, very quiet," "You hardly ever see people outside, even kids," as conveyed to Atlanta News First.
Despite the absence of prior calls to the residence, what drove the suspect to commit such an act remains unknown. The local community, shaken by the sudden act of violence, looks for ways to feel secure again, with some, like Long, taking solace in solitude and vigilance: "I just go in the house and lock the doors and pray nobody comes in on me," as mentioned by Atlanta News First.
