On a Tuesday afternoon in Medford, Long Island, a 12-year-old boy's quick thinking led to the arrest of a burglar during a home invasion. According to ABC7NY, the boy was home when he heard glass breaking in the kitchen and sensed an intruder inside the house. Rather than confronting the situation, the child escaped through his bedroom window and hid in the backyard, where he contacted the police.
Reports indicate that Suffolk County Police responded promptly, arriving within three minutes of the call to find 53-year-old Christian Garcia in the home after breaking a kitchen window. Arrested at the scene, Garcia was charged with third-degree burglary and possession of burglars tools, per the same source. Thankfully, the boy escaped the ordeal unharmed.
The New York Post provided additional details on the incident, identifying the boy as Tristen Taylor and describing how he leaped from his window to escape the intruder, now identified as Garcia, who at the time was homeless. In a scenario reminiscent of a well-known holiday film, the boy's actions helped stop the trespasser before any harm could occur. "At first, I thought he was kidding because he was so calm when he called me," Tristen's mother, Amber Taylor, said in a statement obtained by the New York Post. It was only after an officer took the phone that she realized the gravity of the situation.
The Taylor family home was equipped with surveillance equipment that captured the burglar moving through the home and even attempting to disable a camera. Following his arrest and the swift action by police, Garcia was held on $50,000 cash bail after his arraignment. Unconcerned, the boy made sure to check on the family's Christmas presents, according to the same New York Post article. "He really is a hero and we're all so proud of him," Amber expressed, emphasizing the boy's courage and focus in ensuring the holiday remained undisturbed.
