During the second quarter of a girls' basketball game between Speedway and Monrovia, a referee suddenly collapsed. Despite immediate efforts to revive him, including the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), he was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident occurred with 6:39 left on the clock in the second quarter, as confirmed by FOX59.
Jon Regashus, the Monrovia High School athletic director, described the scene to IndyStar, saying the referee "stepped back into position and lost his legs (balance). I'm not a medical expert but it appeared to be a cardiac arrest." Regashus further noted the swiftly administered medical attention, yet, unfortunately, these efforts were insufficient in saving the official's life. The identity of the referee has not been released, pending notification of next of kin. The subsequent boys’ game slated for the same evening was postponed, as was the girls' game against Tri West scheduled for the following day.
The sudden and shocking death prompted an immediate response from the staff and emergency personnel. According to WTHR, medical personnel administered the AED to the referre within moments of his collapse and EMTs arrived shortly after, a testament to the preparedness of the school's emergency protocols. Nevertheless, the official could not be resuscitated and was declared deceased on the premises.
As the community grapples with the loss, Monrovia High School has taken steps to support those affected. "I can't say enough good things about the people who helped," Regashus told 13News. In a show of solace and community care, the school indicated that counselors would be available to help students process the traumatic event.
