State Rep. J.D. Prescott (R-Union City) announced a partnership with the Indiana Department of Transportation to lower speed limits near Jay School Corp. on State Road 67. The new limits will be 50 mph from the school to the edge of Portland, dropping to 35 mph during school hours, according to Indiana House Republicans.

According to a report by Indiana House Republicans, the decision follows requests from school staff, law enforcement, and families concerned about the hazardous road. “Lowering the speed limit and improving signage will help protect students and drivers,” said Prescott, who expects the changes to be implemented in the coming months.

INDOT is also reviewing safety upgrades at two other locations in Jay and Delaware counties. Additionally, the department plans to install riprap around the bridge over Greenville Creek on SR 227 in Randolph County as part of a statewide bridge safety initiative.

"This has been a priority for school staff, law enforcement, and families who travel this road each day," Prescott told Indiana House Republicans, noting that the bridge work will require right-of-way access for contractors as part of safety improvements.
