Rockdale County residents are about to get a little greener post-holiday season, thanks to Keep Conyers-Rockdale Beautiful (KCRB). The environmentally conscious out there can take a sigh of relief knowing that their Christmas trees can avoid the landfill fates often prescribed to them. Starting January 3, 2026, KCRB's "Bring One for the Chipper" program invites locals to bring their live Christmas trees—stripped of all their festive adornments—for recycling at the Rockdale County Recycling Center. According to the initiative's announcement, if you're quick on your feet and among the first 50 registrants, you might just walk away with a sapling to boot.
For those wishing to sustain the seasonal spirit, the Georgia Forestry Commission is offering tree seedlings to early participants. Running through January 10, the Rockdale County–residents-only initiative will launch its tree recycling services, weather permitting, at 9:00 a.m. on January 3. Before your enthusiasm sprouts too wildly, be sure to pre-register by emailing [email protected] with your full name, phone number, and your top choice for a seedling, whether it be White Oak, Bald Cypress, or Catalpa. Do note, however, come rain or shine, and supply limitations might guide which seedlings are ultimately available.
As environmental stewardship gains momentum in local communities, it's efforts like these that shine a light on practical and accessible ways to ensure a more sustainable world. Remember, your discarded tree, once it served its holiday purpose, can serve yet another: as chipped material for beneficial reuse. When dropping off your Christmas tree, KCRB reminds all that decorations, tinsel, lights, nails, and tree stands must be removed prior to donation.
