Yesterday morning, Boston Police responded to a reported fight in the South End, where they apprehended a suspect now facing serious charges stemming from the incident. According to the Boston Police Department's news release, the confrontation occurred around 2:00 AM near 850 Harrison Avenue, close to the Boston Medical Center.
Officers arrived on the scene to find the suspect, later identified as Branden Bannister, 37, of Roxbury, already in cuffs thanks to the efforts of Boston Medical Center Public Safety. A scuffle had broken out after Bannister was allegedly caught with items belonging to a patient. In attempt to deescalate the situation, public safety engaged but were repelled when Bannister punched an officer, leading to a violent struggle during which an officer suffered life threatening injuries from a stabbing. Bannister was later taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
The incident took a dangerous turn when Bannister purportedly reached into his hoodie during the altercation, escalating tensions and resulting in an officer being stabbed. Despite the mayhem, "the victim self-applied to the emergency room with life threatening injuries," as per the department's statement. His quick actions may well have been crucial in preserving his own life. Meanwhile, another officer discovered his ballistic vest had been slashed, though he did not sustain an injury.
Upon Bannister's search and subsequent arrest, law enforcement found and seized two bags containing what appeared to be crack cocaine and cocaine, weighing approximately 26 grams. Bannister now faces several charges, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and trafficking of cocaine. His arraignment is to quickly take place in the Boston Municipal Court where the extent of his infractions will be formally addressed.
