San Diego International Airport (SAN) is preparing for a substantial increase in passenger traffic during the upcoming holiday season, with officials projecting approximately 1.4 million travelers will pass through the airport between December 19, 2025, and January 5, 2026, according to the San Diego International Airport.

Airport authorities identified December 23, December 28, and January 4 as the busiest travel days, with an estimated 85,000 passengers expected on each of those dates. Overall, SAN anticipates a 4-5 percent increase in passenger volume compared to the 2024 holiday travel period, marking continued growth in air travel demand.

Popular outbound destinations from San Diego during the holidays are expected to include Las Vegas, San Francisco, Denver, Phoenix, and Seattle. Airport officials noted that the increase in travelers aligns with airlines introducing new routes and expanding existing services, reflecting sustained growth across the aviation industry.

Travelers are advised to plan by packing carefully, ensuring prohibited items are not included in carry-on luggage, and checking flight statuses directly with their airlines before arrival. Passengers are strongly encouraged to arrive early, especially on peak travel days, as longer-than-usual traffic congestion and security screening wait times are anticipated.

SAN offers more than 8,000 parking spaces across the Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 Parking Plazas. Officials recommend reserving parking in advance through the airport’s website to reduce delays. For those picking up arriving passengers, the Cell Phone Lot, located in the Terminal 2 West Parking Lot on McCain Road, is available and operates until 12:30 AM, helping to alleviate curbside congestion.

Additionally, the airport’s SAN Pass Program enables non-ticketed guests to access the terminals for dining, shopping, and welcoming arriving travelers. Throughout December, passengers and visitors can also expect seasonal entertainment, including holiday music performances, carolers, and appearances by Santa and his elves.
