East Garfield Park is getting a new all-day hangout right on the edge of its namesake green space. Semaphore Cafe, a coffee-and-brunch spot, is slated to open January 5, 2026, at 3458 W. Lake St., sitting directly across from the lawn of Garfield Park and the Conservatory. Owner Richard Weber says he wants the cozy corner shop to feel like a regular stop for neighbors, not a far-flung destination for brunch pilgrims.

Storefront And Permits

Before the espresso machines and Dutch babies moved in, the ground-floor space went through a major overhaul. Public permit records show the storefront was substantially remodeled in 2023 to prep it for food and beverage service. Those details are listed in contractor records online, according to BuildZoom.

Owner, Opening Date And Hours

Weber, who previously launched Albany Park cocktail bar Bokeh and spent more than a decade living in Portland, relocated to East Garfield Park about a year ago. As reported by WTTW, he is planning a January 5, 2026, opening for Semaphore, with initial hours set from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week.

Menu Highlights

Semaphore is leaning into brunch, with a menu built around local suppliers. Expect Steingold’s bagels with lox, savory and sweet Dutch babies, chilaquiles, biscuits and gravy, and avocado toast. Sandwiches will be available both for takeout and to eat in.

Pastries are slated to come from Publican Quality Bread, while the drink lineup will feature Sparrow Coffee and Spirit Tea. A small retail nook will offer tea, preserves, and cookbooks, and there are plans to sell picnic kits tailored for park outings across the street.

Next To The Conservatory

Semaphore takes over a high-ceilinged corner space with south-facing windows that look directly out onto Garfield Park and the Conservatory. The Garfield Park Conservatory is one of the city’s largest horticultural institutions, according to the Chicago Park District.

Neighborhood Focus

Weber says the cafe is built first and foremost for the people who live nearby, with plans for community-minded touches like monthly trash cleanups and a focus on everyday reliability over tourist buzz. “I operate from this ‘We deserve nice things too’ standpoint,” he told WTTW.

Semaphore’s soft opening is scheduled for January 5, 2026, and the cafe is expected to be open daily from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
