Senator Mark Kelly, speaking at Stanford University last month, advocated for America's leadership in the sphere of artificial intelligence (AI), emphasizing the need for an inclusive approach that benefits all citizens, not just major tech corporations. His keynote titled "AI & the Economy: Opportunities, Risks, and Policy for Shared Prosperity" laid out his vision, detailed in the "AI for America" roadmap — a strategy that aims to harness the AI explosion for national progress. According to U.S. Senator Mark Kelly's Senate press release,  he spoke of his engineering background and his daily use of AI, highlighting the crucial role of American innovation and workforce in achieving current advancements.

Senator Kelly underscored the importance of seizing the AI boom "to literally change so much of our lives," as he puts it. He brought to light the AI for America plan back in September after consulting with various stakeholders, including labor leaders and tech experts. "It benefits all of us for America to lead in AI," Kelly mentioned, stressing that a dynamic response is necessary to keep pace with technology's swift advancements. As reported by U.S. Senator Mark Kelly's Senate page, this includes acknowledging the dangers of policy lagging behind technology, with potential harm to people as a consequence.

Kelly’s AI initiative emphasizes early AI education to prepare students for the workforce. He supports upskilling through community colleges and apprenticeships, noting that registered apprenticeships, credentialing, and public-private partnerships can increase the chances of young people finding good-paying jobs after school. He also sees the AI Horizon Fund as key to supporting these programs.

In his speech, Kelly consistently highlighted the egalitarian aspect of the technological surge. He aims for an AI future that doesn't just cater to a select few but rather works for the common benefit of all Americans across the board. "My goal with AI for America is to raise important questions about how the AI boom and its continued development can put workers at the forefront," Kelly asserted, as reported by  U.S. Senator Mark Kelly's Senate page. His proposal is intended to kickstart a broader conversation on this subject, aiming to influence policy and ultimately shape the country's trajectory in the face of AI advancements.
