Memphis families have something special to look forward to this holiday season. On Sunday, Shelby County Commissioner Erika Sugarmon is hosting the Wheels & Beats: Memphis Youth Skate Jam. From Noon to 3:00 p.m. at Old Time Pottery, children aged 6-16 are invited to receive free skateboards while enjoying live entertainment and food.
While aiming to spread joy and holiday spirit, this family-friendly event, free of charge, will provide skateboards on a first-come, first-served basis, making sure they don't last. In partnership with LaterSkaters Memphis, attendees will also have the opportunity to take skateboarding lessons. "We want every child to feel seen, celebrated, and encouraged, and this event is just one way we can uplift our families and community," Commissioner Sugarmon declared in a statement obtained by the Shelby County website.
Aside from the skating activities, families will enjoy an energetic "Battle of the DJs" with LaDell Beamon versus DJ Jay Woods providing the beats. Compliments of Commissioner Erika Sugarmon's office, the Heal the Hood Foundation of Memphis, MSCS Board Member Tamarques Porter, the YMCA, the Shelby County Health Department, the Shelby County Emergency Management & Homeland Security Agency, and Checkers, free food and drinks will be available to all attendees.
The Wheels & Beats event is exemplary of the community's collaborative spirit, leveraging resources and partnerships to support local youth. Having the support of organizations such as LaterSkaters Memphis and the Heal the Hood Foundation of Memphis can inspire the young residents to engage in positive, healthy activities. For those interested, this event promises not only a day of fun but also an opportunity to learn new skills and enjoy the camaraderie around them, wrapped with goodness shared by the entire community.
