A 20-year-old man was clinging to life Saturday afternoon after he was shot during a sidewalk dispute in Chicago's South Austin neighborhood, according to police. He was hit in the back and rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he remained in serious condition, as Area Four detectives opened an investigation.
FOX 32 Chicago reports the gunfire erupted around 3:21 p.m. in the 0–100 block of North LeClaire when an unknown male pulled a gun during a verbal argument and fired at the 20-year-old. The victim was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition, and Area Four detectives were assigned to handle the case.
Police response and what investigators say
The Chicago Police Department assigns Area Four detectives to investigate shootings on the city’s West Side, where they typically canvass the block for witnesses and surveillance video, according to the Chicago Police Department. Detectives will review any available footage and follow up on tips as they work to identify the shooter.
Where this fits in
South Austin has seen multiple shootings this year, and residents and local leaders often cite gun violence as an ongoing challenge in the neighborhood. Earlier this summer, NBC Chicago reported on a July shooting that wounded four men, underscoring persistent public safety concerns in the area.
What to watch
Authorities have not released the identity of the shooter and no arrests had been reported, according to FOX 32 Chicago. Anyone with information is urged to contact Area Four detectives or the department’s tip line so investigators can pursue new leads.
