Last Saturday, tragedy struck a Snellville neighborhood when a fire engulfed a home on Jonathan Court. Gwinnett County fire officials reported that firefighters arrived around 1:04 a.m. to find significant flames issuing from the garage area, the blaze quickly consuming the two-story structure and threatening to spread, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
Inside, a grim discovery awaited as crews, wading through severely cluttered conditions that made their efforts both difficult and hazardously complex, found the body of a woman in a bathroom; her husband had narrowly escaped from the blaze, telling investigators that a smoke alarm had roused the couple from sleep, and while he was able to get out after witnessing the fire take hold in the garage, he was unable to save his wife despite his efforts and cries for her to evacuate, the home suffered extensive damage from the fire, smoke, and water before being declared a total loss. A fire chaplain was present at the scene to support the firefighters, as detailed by FOX 5 Atlanta.
While the husband managed to escape the burning home, his attempt to extinguish the fire proved futile, and with his wife unaccounted for, he rushed to a neighbor's residence to call for help, 11Alive reports. Firefighters faced the added challenge of a partial structural collapse, which initially forced them to retreat before they could re-enter from the rear.
The cause of the fire, which started in the garage, has yet to be determined. No firefighter injuries were reported.
