St. Louis city officials are seeking public input on the planned replacement of the Loughborough Bridge. Built in the mid-20th century, the bridge needs updates to improve traffic flow and safety. Residents can submit comments on the project’s website by December 19.
According to the City of St. Louis, the Loughborough Bridge carries over 20,000 vehicles daily and connects to Carondelet Park, local businesses, and other resources. Plans call for a single-span replacement bridge with new sidewalks and a shared-use path. Its location near Carondelet Park and the Carondelet Connector Trail means the design and construction will focus on minimizing impacts to these community areas.
City officials say the bridge replacement will improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. The project is designed to keep the Carondelet Connector Trail open for most of the construction, with only brief closures for certain activities. The City aims to balance progress with minimal disruption to daily routines.
In coordination with the Missouri Department of Transportation, work on the Loughborough Bridge replacement over Interstate 55 is set to begin in fall 2027, with completion expected by fall 2029.
