State Rep. Matt Gress is calling for a timeout in the Scottsdale Unified School District's (SUSD) decision to potentially close two schools, Pima Elementary and Echo Canyon K-8 School. According to a letter sent by Gress to the school board members, the Arizona House Education Committee chairman expressed his concerns about what he described as a hurried process and incomplete fiscal analysis. "Closing schools has lasting consequences. Before the board takes any action, the public should see a full explanation of the fiscal impact, the alternatives that were considered, and how the district plans to support the students who would be uprooted," Gress stated.
Gress is advocating to delay the vote until February 1 to fully assess the implications of such a move. He argues that the SUSD can maintain operations during a more thorough review, despite the district's claimed financial pressures from declining enrollment and projected budget shortfalls. "Families deserve clarity before a final decision is made," Gress said, emphasizing the need for the district to round out its analysis and directly respond to parental concerns.
In his correspondence, Gress also hinted at forthcoming emergency legislation aiming to increase districts' flexibility concerning their property. Teaming up with Senator Werner, Gress plans to allow districts to sell underused sites to fund and fortify academic programs—a strategy they believe will help retain student enrollment.
"Districts need practical tools to respond to enrollment shifts," Gress proclaimed, signaling a preference for districts to be able to easily sell unused property and reinvest those funds back into the educational system. This stance comes in the wake of criticism over SUSD's rush to action without exploring all the options on the table. "I urge the board to pause this process and use the next several weeks to finish the due diligence that remains and to allow the Legislature to act on the proposed policies," he added in his plea for a delay.
