A Sunset Hills community is grappling with the aftermath of a brutal murder after a woman was found dead in her home's basement last Thursday. Joseph Michael Marino, 30, is facing serious charges including first-degree murder and tampering with evidence following the discovery of 64-year-old Melissa Anderson's body, as reported by KSDK. According to the police, wellness check responders found Anderson with severe injuries to her head and torso, ultimately leading to Marino's arrest on Friday.
Marino, reportedly known to have had a prior relationship with Anderson, was captured on surveillance footage around the time of the her death, a detail that emerged as officials combed through evidence and inquiries amongst the unsettled community members as identified by FOX 2, more than 30 detectives from the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis have been diligently working on the case, gathering evidence and conducting interviews to clarify what precisely occurred.
Findings from a search warrant executed at Marino's residence uncovered incriminating bloody clothing and shoes in a trash container; authorities also found Anderson's driver's license and some mail, confirming potential links between the crime and the suspect, shared by a representative of the Major Case Squad with KMOX. Marino reportedly exhibited what are believed to be defensive wounds on his hands and ankle, suggestive of a struggle. Marino is currently held on a one-million-dollar cash-only bond.
In the wake of the horrific event, neighbors expressed their disbelief and sorrow, residents like Robert VanMierlo and Ellen Waters recounting their experiences and sharing memories of Anderson, "She was a very creative person, very artistic, and talented that way, and a friendly, good neighbor. I just can't believe this. I'm speechless," Waters told FOX 2.
