San Francisco gingerbread artist Peter Williams drew a crowd in the Castro on Sunday with a five-house replica of Alamo Square’s Painted Ladies, built entirely out of gingerbread. The detailed creation, complete with petite interior rooms and a vintage Volkswagen bus parked out front, was unveiled at a fundraiser for Lyric, the local nonprofit that supports LGBTQ+ youth, and put on display at The Academy in the Castro.
As reported by SFist, Williams unveiled the sugary skyline at Sunday’s fundraising event, then shared close-up shots on Instagram that show the five-house set, edible trees, and peeks at the interiors from the back. SFist also noted that he has been crafting gingerbread houses for about 15 years, steadily leveling up the ambition and complexity of his builds.
From TV To Tiny Interiors
According to Food Network, Williams brought that architectural style to national TV as a competitor on Holiday Baking Championship: Gingerbread Showdown. The show profiled him as an interior designer with a structural approach to gingerbread, and the competitor gallery lists baking assistant Alexa Ortiz as part of his team, highlighting how his design-focused mindset carried into the studio challenges.
What He Built
This year’s centerpiece is a miniature riff on the famous Alamo Square row, with five carefully rendered facades and small interior rooms that viewers can peer into from behind the display. Williams told SFist, “It’s been quite a journey and I don’t plan on stopping yet,” and both the article and his Instagram posts show how he layers architectural detail, from cornices to tiny staircases, into his edible constructions.
Where It Was Shown
The Academy in the Castro hosted the fundraiser and features its hours, calendar, and private event rental options on its website, the kind of space where a gingerbread showpiece like this can hold court. After the event, photos Williams shared were boosted across social networks, drawing extra local attention to both the intricate confection and the charity evening that brought it to life.
