Officials have released the identity of the individual killed in an officer-involved shooting in Sweetwater as Justin Robinson, date of birth May 11th, 1995. This follows an incident that unfolded on Monday evening, which is now under the scrutiny of TBI agents.
The episode commenced with a response from the Sweetwater Police Department to a shoplifting call at a location on the 900 block of South Main Street. According to initial reports, officers engaged in a foot pursuit when they came across the suspect. The responding officers were advanced upon by the suspect wielding a knife, under circumstances that are still being pieced together. The confrontation ended tragically when one officer discharged their weapon at Robinson, inflicting fatal injuries. The ordeal left no officers harmed, as documented by the TBI Newsroom.
Currently, TBI agents are proceeding with the task to clarify the sequence of events that triggered the shooting, including compiling evidence and carrying out interviews. These investigative results are being forwarded to the 10th Judicial District Attorney General Stephen Hatchett, who will evaluate them in depth. While the TBI acts as an objective party to uncover the facts, the final decision on the righteousness of the officer's actions falls within the purview of the District Attorney General.
While the TBI refrains from naming officers involved in such confrontations, the Sweetwater Police Department reserves the right to address queries about the officer's identity as deemed appropriate. The department has not yet released any statement regarding the officer who discharged his weapon, ensuing the fatal shooting of the suspect, who was transported to a hospital and later pronounced dead.
