Motorists who frequent the Great Smoky Mountains can brace themselves for delays starting January 5, 2026, as the National Park Service initiates a substantial overhaul of the Gatlinburg Spur – a key route that weaves through the national park. WVLT reports that this first phase, scheduled to run through April 14, will see the paving of road shoulders, guardrail replacements, and the enhancement of pull-offs to mitigate current roadway hazards.
The upgrade work, which is part of a multi-year project, will lead to daily lane closures from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., but these are not expected to extend beyond a mile at any given point, in order to lessen impingements on the flow of traffic and there will be a hiatus in construction every weekend, kicking off at noon on Fridays to accommodate incoming visitors, and during federal holidays and the Easter travel window from March 30 to April 10, all in a bid to limit interference with seasonal and leisure travel, as noted by WATE.
Further down the line, construction efforts will unfold to include the reworking of critical infrastructure like the Wiley Oakley and Husky Grove Bridges, and the implementation of rock scaling and roadway realignments will be conducted to increase protection against rockfalls, drawing from recommendations made in a comprehensive 2019 Traffic Study by the National Park Service and the Federal Highway Administration that the park is incorporating into its design phase, stated WBIR.
