Last night, the U.S. Senate gave a nod to Arizona's brighter future by unanimously passing the La Paz County Solar Energy and Job Creation Act, which is now on its way to President Trump for his signature. Senators Ruben Gallego and Mark Kelly have shepherded the bill through the Senate, a stride that complements the efforts of House Representatives Paul Gosar, Andy Biggs, and David Schweikert.
The Act is set to empower La Paz County to continue developing its solar capabilities which includes the significant undertaking of a 500 MW solar farm coupled with up to 900 MWH of battery storage – putting the facility in the position to supply approximately 75,000 homes. This legislation comes on the heels of a previous land transfer that, according to Senator Gallego's official release, enabled the county to make headway in solar park creation near the Ten West Link transmission project. The project promises, not just light, but livelihood—offering 700 construction jobs and 10 permanent positions.
Arizona, touted as the "sunniest state in the union," has significant skin in the solar game, and legislation like this aims to harness that natural capital. Senator Gallego emphasised Arizona's unique position and the potential benefits of investment in the solar landscape. "As the sunniest state in the union, Arizona has massive potential to power homes and create jobs through solar development. La Paz County's solar development is a perfect example of what is possible when we invest in solar, and I am proud to help them continue that work with the passage of this legislation," he stated, per his Senate release.
Senator Kelly also echoed the economic impact of the bill, noting, "This is a big win for La Paz County and for Arizona," citing the unlocking of land as a strategic move that endows the county with the means to supply clean energy and usher in a wave of well-paying jobs. "By unlocking this land, the county can power tens of thousands of homes with clean, affordable energy while creating hundreds of good-paying jobs. This project builds on the success La Paz County has already delivered, strengthens Arizona's leadership in solar energy, and puts real economic opportunity to work for local families," he highlighted, as mentioned in his Senate press release.
