The recent commencement ceremony at the Fifth Third Arena saw a diverse group of students from 47 states and 61 countries celebrating their academic achievements. President Neville Pinto addressed a packed crowd, filled with the families and friends of graduates, highlighting the hard work that led to their success. "Graduates, this is your day. You have worked hard to get here. And we are here to celebrate that. This arena is full of joy, pride and excitement because of what you have achieved," Pinto noted, as reported by The University of Cincinnati's news site.
During the event, the fall graduates, whose backgrounds are as varied as the disciplines they studied, were recognized for enriching the fabric of the university. "Everyone is welcome here and each of you has made this university better," Pinto said, according to UC News. The ceremony not only celebrated undergraduate and master's degree recipients but also honored 153 individuals who reached the pinnacle of academic pursuit, the doctoral degree. The doctoral hooding ceremony is a tradition wherein faculty members who've guided candidates through their scholarly journey place the hood on the graduates, signifying their new academic status.
An international cohort marked the commencement, as attendees hailed from across six continents—an embodiment of the university's commitment to inclusive excellence. The celebration served as a bridge between the arduous years of study and the future impacts these graduates are poised to make in their respective fields. According to Pinto, their scholarship demonstrates a "commitment to improving the world," as reported by UC News through various channels of knowledge and service.
"Graduates, your work reflects the very purpose of a research university: to expand understanding, address complex problems and improve society through inquiry and innovation," Pinto remarked as noted by UC News, emphasizing the value of higher education and the responsibility that comes with it. These words capture the essential role of the graduates in contributing to a broader societal discourse and evolution, as they step forward armed with their newly minted degrees, ready to tackle global challenges.
