A suspect has been arrested in connection with a string of drive-by shootings that have targeted car dealerships in Douglas County. According to details from a social media post by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, the arrest came after an investigation into incidents that occurred between November 7 and December 15, where rounds were fired into dealership buildings after hours, thankfully avoiding injury as the buildings were empty.
Special Investigations Section (SIS) employed Flock Safety cameras and surveillance footage from the impacted dealerships to successfully track the suspect's vehicle and secure a license plate number. These efforts effectively led to the identification and apprehension of 38-year-old Matthew Schwettman from Westminster. Multiple firearms were seized during the subsequent search, and the vehicle that was reportedly used in the shootings has been impounded.
In a statement, Sheriff Weekly emphasized the gravity of the situation, "This person was an absolute danger to our community. Regardless of whether the buildings were occupied, randomly firing into businesses is a recipe for tragedy. It was only a matter of time before a stray bullet seriously injured or killed someone," as per the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Schwettman is facing a felony charge of Criminal Mischief valued between $20,000 and $99,999, along with seven counts of Illegal Discharge of a Firearm.
