A fire erupted in a barn in Winchendon, Massachusetts, last Saturday evening prompting the evacuation of nearby residents and an all-hands response from multiple fire departments. As reported by WCVB, the blaze began shortly after 8 p.m. at 50 Old Center, and though no human injuries were reported, the fate of several farm animals, including chickens and ducks, depended on the barn doors and gates opened by residents to facilitate their escape.
According to details from Turn to 10, the Winchendon Fire Department focused its efforts on preventing the spread of flames to a large neighboring home, managing to contain the fire to the barn. On a night described as frigid, town building and wiring officials moved quickly to isolate and then restore power to the area, allowing residents to return to their unscathed home.
Crews observed heavy fire upon arrival, which necessitated backup from over a dozen nearby town fire departments to assist with the blaze and provide station coverage. Both accounts from WCVB and Turn to 10 mentioned that the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
