A Christmas night drive turned dangerous when a man was arrested for driving under the influence on Massachusetts' Interstate 95, veering into oncoming traffic in several towns. The 36-year-old Worcester resident, Paulius Balciunas, was taken into custody after a risky pursuit by police.
According to NBC Boston, Balciunas was spotted steering a black Subaru Legacy south in the northbound lanes. Witnesses reported he took Exit 83 onto Scotland Road prior to being approached by authorities. Despite the flashing lights, sirens of pursuing troopers, and attempts by local police from Newburyport, West Newbury, and Groveland, Balciunas allegedly evaded being stopped, driving erratically, switching lanes, and utilizing the breakdown lane.
The chase eventually ended in Newburyport, where Balciunas is reported to have passed a rotary on Route 1 before stopping on High Street. As per a statement obtained by CBS Boston, once stationary, he remained in the vehicle, brandishing an unknown item while ignoring orders to exit and surrender.
Troopers were eventually able to apprehend Balciunas, who, after being removed from his vehicle, requested medical care. He was transported to a nearby hospital before the booking process for his offenses, which, among others, included operating under the influence of drugs and failure to stop for police. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident, which saw a wrong-way driver threaten the safety of countless individuals on a holiday traditionally reserved for peace and quiet reflection.
