Worcester was the scene of a high-intensity standoff when local police engaged in an hours-long negotiation with a wanted individual, resulting in arrest on firearms and narcotics charges. According to a report by the Worcester Police Department, officers and SWAT team members worked jointly on December 10 to apprehend 46-year-old Nicolas McNerney, who was already facing multiple warrants.
McNerney, along with an associated female identified as 36-year-old Heather Giguere, resisted law enforcement's efforts to take them into custody. The standoff, which started on Olean Street after the two refused police commands and engaged in illegal drug use within their vehicle, reached a dramatic end as the suspect attempted to flee and ultimately found himself stranded in Streeter Pond. As per the police report, detectives made a direct entry into the waters to secure the arrests.
In the early morning hours, a chase ensued, leading to the recovery of two firearms from McNerney, who also struggled with officers during his detention. The Worcester Police Department's Crime Scene Unit was able to seize the weapons. The culprits were found to be in possession of substances including 48.1 grams of crack cocaine, further adding to the list of charges against them. Both McNerney and Giguere required medical evaluations, while several officers received treatment for hypothermia sustained during the pursuit and arrest.
McNerney now faces a array of serious charges including firearm use in a felony, unlawful carry and possession of a firearm, trafficking of Class B substances, and other vehicle-related offenses. Giguere has been charged with interfering with an officer and possession of a Class B substance.
