A two-vehicle collision on US 61 at Port Hudson Plains Road in East Baton Rouge Parish has resulted in tragic loss. Louisiana State Police Troop A reported that 45-year-old Calvin Turner from Zachary died following a crash that occurred shortly before 6 p.m. on Sunday. Turner was operating a 1994 Chevrolet pickup truck when the incident took place.
Turner's vehicle was struck upon by a 2017 Ford Transit van as it was traveling southbound on US 61. It appears, according to the authorities, that Turner failed to yield at a stop sign before entering the intersection. The preliminary investigation is still ongoing and the exact cause of why Turner entered the intersection remains unresolved, as reported by the Louisiana State Police.
The driver of the Ford van was wearing a seatbelt and was not hurt. Turner, however, was not wearing a seatbelt. He suffered serious injuries, was taken to a local hospital, and later died. As part of the investigation, state troopers collected toxicology samples, but they do not currently believe impairment played a role in the crash, as per the Louisiana State Police.
In response to the tragedy, state troopers have issued a reminder to the public about road safety. According to the Louisiana State Police, they advocate for responsible driving choices: "avoid impairment, fatigue, and distractions," and emphasize the importance of using seat belts. "While not all crashes are preventable," they note, "simple precautions like these can save lives."
