
A 16-year-old has been taken into custody in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident that occurred on New Year's Eve, according to an announcement from the New Bedford Police Department. The juvenile is facing charges including motor vehicle homicide and leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death. The New Bedford Police Department shared on their official social media that the charges also encompass negligent operation of a motor vehicle, as well as two violations related to operating with a junior operator’s license. In the wake of the event that led to the death of Nicolasa Ventura Colaj shortly after midnight, authorities were able to quickly and decisively secure an arrest warrant for the teenager involved.
The comprehensive investigation, involving the New Bedford Police, Massachusetts State Police, and the Bristol County District Attorney's Office, has been praised by city officials. Chief Jason Thody expressed his gratitude towards emergency responders and the investigative team for their efforts. "This was a thorough and relentless investigation carried out under extremely difficult circumstances," Thody remarked in a Facebook post. He acknowledged the tragedy of the situation and committed to seeking justice for Ventura Colaj's family. The team had managed to not only locate but also seize the vehicle believed to be involved in the fatal incident.
Mayor Jon Mitchell also expressed his condolences and gratitude toward the investigative team. "In the wake of this indescribable tragedy, I am grateful for the skillful and urgent investigative work of the NBPD, and the important assistance of the State Police and DA Quinn’s Office,” said Mitchell. He hopes that the steadfast pursuit of justice will provide some solace to those grieving the loss of Ventura Colaj. The New Bedford Police Department extended their condolences to the victim's family and friends, assuring that more information will be shared as the investigation continues.
