In a predawn shudder that awoke residents throughout central Illinois, a 3.8 magnitude earthquake made its presence known, specifically jolting the area northwest of Ohlman. WGN-TV reported the quake struck at around 1:27 a.m. Tuesday, positioning its epicenter approximately two and a half miles from the small village situated in Montgomery County.
Even though a tremblor of this magnitude correlates with vibrations that locals might compare to the heavy rumble of a passing truck, there were no immediate reports of damage, merely the unsettled quiet that follows when the earth decides to briefly stir. The United States Geological Survey confirmed the quake's magnitude and depth at about 8.8 km, per WGN-TV.
The village of Ohlman, with a modest census count of 109 souls as of the last decennial survey, found itself unexpectedly center stage in this nocturnal natural occurrence. CBS Chicago remarked that ripples of the tremor were felt even farther afield, with some claims of it reaching as far as Champaign, Illinois.
