In a significant tech industry move, Airbnb has brought on Ahmad Al-Dahle, a former executive at Meta Platforms Inc., as its new Chief Technology Officer, both companies have confirmed. Al-Dahle, known for his leadership in AI at Meta, will steer Airbnb's engineering and data science teams, according to Airbnb. His appointment follows Ari Balogh's departure in December, who served the company for seven years.

CEO Brian Chesky discussed the transitional period with Bloomberg, highlighting Airbnb's strong foundation and its readiness to harness the current tech revolution. Al-Dahle's experience plays a vital role in Airbnb's expansion efforts, which extend beyond lodging into areas such as tours, individual services, and testing grocery delivery in partnership with Instacart, allowing guests to prepare their kitchens upon arrival. Chesky emphasized, "This is a moment when now we’ve built a really strong foundation, but we’re in the midst of a technological revolution" that Airbnb seems well-positioned to seize upon.

Under Al-Dahle's guidance, Airbnb aims to implement advanced AI search features within its app by 2026, envisioning more interactive and personalized travel recommendations that are less reminiscent of traditional search models or chatbots. "What that means is moving away from an anonymous customer just searching, and making sure everyone’s search, everyone’s conversation is unique to them and that we take into account all prior conversations we ever had with you, all information we have," Chesky told Bloomberg. Chesky's vision for AI involves using past interactions and preferences to create a more tailored user experience.

Al-Dahle's career began at Apple Inc., where he worked for 16 years, contributing to projects such as the iPhone's display systems and Apple's self-driving car initiative, before his nearly six-year tenure at Meta, where he oversaw generative AI and large language models. "I’ve seen a lot of frontier teams and technologists fall into the trap of building technology and then searching for a use case," Al-Dahle said in a statement obtained by Bloomberg. "Part of my self-selection criteria in deciding what I wanted to do next was working at a culture that really put the customer first. And I think that’s very strong at Airbnb." His expertise and customer-centric approach seem tailor-made for Airbnb's mission to leverage technology to enhance real-world connections.
