Black ice is a thin, nearly invisible layer of ice that can make roads, bridges, overpasses, and sidewalks dangerously slick, especially overnight and in the early morning, as per the Pottawatomie County Emergency Management's Facebook post.
Officials advise slowing down, leaving extra space between vehicles, avoiding sudden braking or sharp turns, and paying attention to shaded areas and bridges where ice is more likely to form. Pedestrians are encouraged to wear shoes with good traction to reduce the risk of slipping.
Residents are also advised to allow extra travel time or delay trips when possible until conditions improve. Staying alert and cautious is key to preventing accidents during periods of black ice.
