A quiet Libertyville block turned chaotic early Monday when a 41-year-old man allegedly blasted Lake County Sheriff's deputies with bear spray as they tried to take him into custody for a court-ordered mental-health evaluation. One deputy was hospitalized after being sprayed directly in the eyes, and several others were treated by paramedics at the scene. Deputies ultimately used a stun gun to subdue the man, who was then taken to a hospital for treatment, officials said. The early-morning confrontation rattled the north suburban neighborhood and has now triggered a criminal investigation.
According to CBS Chicago, deputies were serving a court-ordered mental-health writ on the man at about 7:10 a.m. in the 200 block of Pond Ridge Road, after a judge approved a petition raising concerns about his well-being. CBS reports the petition followed complaints of paranoia and property damage inside the home, including holes punched in walls. The outlet said the man was inside his bedroom when deputies arrived.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office said deputies first tried to talk to the man through a closed bedroom door and saw he was holding a hatchet. After deputies persuaded him to put the hatchet down, they went into the room and said he hit them at close range with a large canister of bear spray. One deputy took the spray directly to the eyes and was transported to an area hospital, while six other deputies were treated at the scene by paramedics and released. According to the sheriff's office, deputies then used a TASER to bring the man under control and take him into custody.
CBS Chicago reports the suspect was taken to an area hospital, both for the effects of the spray and for his erratic behavior. While at the hospital, the sheriff's office says, the man kicked a nurse. Authorities said they plan to seek criminal charges for the alleged attacks at the home and at the hospital, though specific counts had not yet been announced.
Officials describe the scene
In a statement, Sheriff John D. Idleburg said, "Mental health writs are inherently unpredictable, and this incident underscores those risks," and he praised deputies for staying calm and professional during what he called a dangerous call, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office. The release noted that the county's Crisis Outreach and Support Team (COaST) assisted in serving the writ and that the petition was filed after someone close to the man raised concerns about his safety. Officials have not released the suspect's name.
What happens next
Sheriff's deputies said they will seek criminal charges tied to the attacks at both the home and the hospital. Prosecutors will decide on the exact charges after reviewing investigative reports and medical records. County officials said the incident remains under investigation and that no additional details were being released.
