
A semi-truck slammed into the rear of another tractor-trailer around 2 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of US-41 and Martin Luther King Drive in North Chicago, injuring two drivers and shutting down the highway in both directions through the morning commute. One driver had to be cut free from a heavily damaged vehicle before being stabilized, while the other was treated for minor injuries.
According to CBS News Chicago, a North Chicago battalion chief reported that one driver had to be extricated from a heavily damaged vehicle before crews managed to stabilize that person's condition. The cause of the crash has not been identified, and road closures were expected to stretch from Amhurst Parkway to Martin Luther King Drive as crews worked the scene. Per the same report, morning commuters were told to expect delays as officials worked to clear the wreckage from the roadway.
NBC Chicago reported that the collision unfolded around 2 a.m. when one semi struck the rear of the other at the US-41 and Martin Luther King Drive intersection, shutting down traffic in both directions well into the morning rush. Traffic officials pointed commuters toward Green Bay Road as a primary alternate route to bypass the extensive delays building on US-41 between Lake County and the Wisconsin border, the station noted.
A Corridor With a History of Serious Crashes
This is not the first time the US-41 and Martin Luther King Drive junction has produced a serious wreck. In May 2026, the same intersection saw another multi-vehicle crash that left people injured and destroyed a guardrail, according to the Law Offices of Michael W. Kopsick. And in October 2025, North Chicago firefighters carried out a complex extrication nearby on US-41 near Route 137 after a passenger vehicle crashed underneath the rear of a semi-trailer, as reported by Cardinal News.
Part of the reason for the repeated severity may lie in how the corridor is used. US-41, also known as Skokie Highway, carries more than 30,000 vehicles a day through North Chicago and functions as a primary non-tolled alternative to Interstate 94 for both freight haulers and regional commuters, according to the Lake County Department of Transportation. Martin Luther King Drive itself serves as an industrial truck corridor, home to facilities like 901MLK Storage and Parking, a multi-acre staging site built for 53-foot tractor-trailers just off the highway, according to the company's own site.
Why Truck Crashes Carry Outsized Risk
Statewide data underscores why collisions involving big rigs draw extra scrutiny. Illinois Department of Transportation figures for 2024 show tractor-trailers were involved in 11,294 crashes statewide, just 3.7% of all motor vehicle collisions, yet those crashes accounted for 8.4% of total traffic fatalities, per the Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard P.C. analysis of the data. The same figures show that roughly 80% of the 106 people killed in Illinois tractor-trailer crashes that year were occupants of other vehicles rather than the trucks themselves.
Regional freight growth may be compounding the exposure. Complex crashes involving commercial vehicles in Lake County are typically investigated by the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team, which coordinates technical reconstruction work across 37 member municipalities alongside local departments such as North Chicago police, according to ACTAR.
It remains unclear whether MCAT has been formally deployed to examine vehicle telematics and event data recorders from Thursday's crash, and IDOT has not confirmed when all lanes of US-41 between Amhurst Parkway and Martin Luther King Drive will fully reopen.
