Blaine Police Department has taken a step to address the needs of crime victims by spotlighting Andrea Donaldson, the cornerstone of their Victim Services program. According to a recent BPD social media post, Donaldson serves as the department's Victim Services Specialist, a role created in the fall of 2022 through a grant from the International Chiefs of Police Association. Donaldson's daily grind is far from mundane, with duties that range from riding along with officers to responding on scenes, coordinating a sympathy card program, and assisting with death notifications.
One highlight of her job, as Andrea Donaldson mentioned in the police department's post, is the unpredictable nature of law enforcement that requires constant adaptability. Donaldson emphasizes the importance of empathy, compassion, and adaptability in her work. "Even victims of the same crime will often need different things," she says, pointing to the necessity for careful listening and individualized treatment of victims.
Donaldson finds a strong sense of camaraderie and support within the Blaine Police Department, which she cites as her most enjoyed aspect of the job. Citing Steve Jobs, Donaldson's guiding principle is passion for one's work: "The only way to do great work is to love what you do." She shares this advice with those new to the field of Victim Services, recommending they establish connections with others in the community doing similar work. As for her travels, Donaldson recounted to the Blaine Police Department her visit to Italy as an unforgettable experience; it was an "incredible vacation" marked by its rich culture, fascinating history, and delicious food.
