Following a security scare at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, enhanced measures are being set in motion to boost safety during a major upcoming track meet. The decision comes after a harrowing incident earlier this month, where a gun was reportedly flashed by an individual during a verbal altercation involving high school athletes.
Details from an NBC Boston report revealed that the confrontation occurred on January 8, around 8:20 p.m. Following this, the Bay State Conference has announced that, going forward, extra precautions will be put in place beginning with Thursday's event. The Boston Police Department, in collaboration with the Roxbury Community College Police Department, is leading the investigation into the assault involving a firearm.
According to both NBC Boston and Boston 25 News, among the new security measures are mandatory wristbands for all students and spectators and a thorough security screening process via an EVOLV system. The entrance on Malcolm X Boulevard will serve as the only access point for teams heading to the facility.
The incident, which involved two Dedham High School student athletes and three individuals who were not affiliated with the TVL track meet, did not result in any injuries. Following the event, "to be clear, this incident did not involve any Bay State Conference member schools, nor was anyone harmed or injured during this incident," the Bay State administration emphasized in a letter obtained by NBC Boston. These new steps, including the constant visibility of wristbands and the scanning of electronic devices, are aimed at preventing future incidents of such a nature.
As part of the response effort, Boston police have taken two of the three suspects into custody, with both facing charges related to the incident. Boston 25 News has reached out to Dedham schools for comments, but has yet to receive a response. In the meantime, athletic directors will be present during conference meets at the Reggie Lewis Center to support the teams and coaches, and students are advised to stay within the facility for the duration of the event. Boston police continue to encourage anyone with information on the incident to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation.
