A tragic event unfolded on Jan. 18 when a man was shot and killed after allegedly breaking into a home in Buckeye. The incident took place near Yuma Road and 237th Lane. Buckeye police responded to a report of shots fired around 9 p.m. and found 27-year-old Michael Diaz suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside the residence. He was pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix.
At the time of the intrusion, a mother and her two adult children were inside the home. They heard banging on their door, and the situation escalated when a woman answered, and an intruder attempted to force his way in. "A man in the home retrieved a handgun and went to the door just as the intruder broke through the security door and stepped inside. That is when the man fired at the intruder, striking him," detailed the Buckeye police in a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix. A neighbor mentioned hearing sounds that they initially mistook for fireworks. "I just thought it was random fireworks," the neighbor told FOX 10 Phoenix. "I was in the living room with my wife and daughter, and we just hear multiple gunshots. It’s really scary."
Moreover, the family has chosen not to provide statements to the media following the deadly encounter. The home, when seen on the following Monday, bore signs of the incident with the front yard marked by evidence markers and visible bloodstains, according to FOX 10 Phoenix.
There has been no indication that the family knew Diaz prior to the altercation. Following the event, there were no other reported injuries. The sequence of events as sketched out by the police seems to suggest a narrative in which self-defense played an pivotal role. This incident remains under investigation by the Buckeye police, as corroborated by a report from ABC 15.
