Michael Abatti, a notable figure in farming from California's Imperial Valley, stands accused of the first-degree murder of his estranged wife, Kerri Ann Abatti, and is currently being held on a $5.5 million bail. As reported by Yahoo News, Abatti was extradited to Arizona where his plea of not guilty was entered last Wednesday in Navajo County Superior Court.
Following his arrest on December 23, details have emerged concerning the moments leading up to Kerri Ann Abatti's death on November 20. She was found at her Pinetop-Lakeside home, having been fatally shot in the head through a window. Abatti was allowed by the court to return to El Centro for medical treatments, with certain restrictions including the surrender of his passport and limited travel permissions, located wearing a suicide vest in a photo taken in Navajo County on Wednesday, according to Yahoo News.
Before the tragic incident, the Abattis were deeply mired in conflict over their divorce and the financial nuances attached to it. Kerri Ann, having left Michael in August 2023 after more than three decades of marriage, had been pushing for an increase of monthly spousal support from $5,000 to $30,000, alongside a demand for $100,000 in attorney fees. Her claims stated that Michael controlled all marital funds and had even removed equipment from the Pinetop property, according to court documents obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix.
In defense, Michael Abatti declared farming losses in previous years, making the requested financial increases implausible. He referenced $90,000 spent on life insurance premiums, surrounding the backdrop of their shared business and personal endeavors. The couple's adult children, who reside in California and Nevada, find themselves caught in the throes of this familial and legal upheaval, according to their divorce filings detailed by FOX 10 Phoenix.
Looking ahead, Michael Abatti is scheduled to appear in court again on March 17 as the case continues to unfold. The layers of personal anguish and legal strife preceding Kerri Ann's untimely death have painted a disquieting portrait of a once-prominent family embroiled in turmoil. The Navajo County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate.
