Starting February 1, 2026, the city will hike up fines for those unlucky enough to snag an expired meter or overtime parking ticket. As reported by the City of Cambridge, a violation that would previously set you back $30 is going to demand $40 from your wallet – a $10 leap that is bound to pinch.
In their defense, the Cambridge Department of Transportation insists these increments are not without good reason. They claim, routine assessments are conducted to ensure that fines effectively deter unfavorable parking behavior and encourage space turnover, which in turn, benefits local businesses and provides more parking opportunities for everyone. According to an official statement, the increased revenue from these fines will not vanish into thin air. Instead, it will be channeled into vital city initiatives designed to create safer streets and tackle upcoming transportation hurdles.
It has been a while since Cambridge drivers faced a surge in parking fines – the last jump from $25 to $30 occurred back in 2019. Cambridge officials say the increase is to catch up with Boston's rates while still staying below what drivers pay in Somerville.
