The Georgia Municipal Association, in partnership with Georgia Trend, has recently bestowed the City of Suwanee with the prestigious 2026 Visionary City Award. Recognized in the Medium Cities Category, Suwanee has been acknowledged for its innovative Town Center on Main project, a venture that seamlessly blends the historic charm of Old Town with the conveniences of a modern downtown. According to official statements, the city's initiative was celebrated for its united and walkable downtown area, a result of redirecting Main Street and prioritizing community feedback.
Removing long-standing physical divides in the urban landscape, this Suwanee project notably included the addition of new greenspaces, pathways for pedestrians and social venues. The transformative effects of these changes were saluted by GMA CEO and executive director Larry Hanson who, in a statement released by the city's news release, highlighted the strengthened civic life and downtown vibrancy stemming from such intentional design and collaboration.
As part of the award's accolades, Mayor Jimmy Burnette's vision for Suwanee came into clear focus. Town Center on Main has, according to Burnette, morphed into more than just a place, but a core part of the residents' daily experiences. He expressed both gratitude for the honor and pride in the community's achievement, as it reflects a united effort to foster connectivity and communal engagement.
