A pedestrian died Wednesday afternoon after being struck by a westbound vehicle on Stone Mountain Highway in Gwinnett County, according to police. The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. and left the victim dead at the scene, with investigators still working to notify next of kin before releasing a name.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, a preliminary investigation found the pedestrian was crossing Stone Mountain Highway from north to south outside a marked crosswalk when the vehicle struck them. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, the outlet reported.
Investigators Withhold Victim's Identity
Gwinnett County police said they are withholding the pedestrian's identity until relatives have been notified, per the same report. The department's Accident Investigation Unit is handling the probe into exactly how the crash unfolded, though the station's account does not specify what, if any, charges or citations may follow.
A Painful Echo From 2019
Wednesday's crash is not the first fatal pedestrian collision reported on this stretch of roadway. In September 2019, a 21-year-old Snellville man named Anthony Davis died after being struck by a silver Volkswagen Jetta while crossing Stone Mountain Highway west of Kilian Hill Road, according to a release from the Gwinnett County government. In that earlier case, police said Davis was also crossing without using a crosswalk when he was hit.
Separately, Stone Mountain Highway has seen other serious incidents over the years, including a crash involving a motorcycle that shut down all lanes in both directions at Lake Lucerne Road, as reported by 11Alive, though that report did not specify when the crash occurred and should not be treated as connected to Wednesday's fatality. Taken together, the incidents underscore a corridor that has drawn repeated attention from first responders, even though the available evidence does not establish a broader pattern of pedestrian fatalities along the highway.
What Comes Next
For now, the case remains in the hands of Gwinnett County's Accident Investigation Unit, and no additional updates have been made public since the crash.
