Police say a 14-year-old girl was pulled from a Phoenix motel room on a stretch of 27th Avenue locals grimly know as "the Blade," and the man she was allegedly staying with is now facing a stack of felony charges tied to sex trafficking. Dennis Mitchell Jr., 42, was arrested and later indicted, a case that is again putting the spotlight on a corridor long plagued by exploitation just north of Indian School Road.
According to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, a grand jury indicted Mitchell on December 1 on one count of child sex trafficking, one count of aggravated assault, one count of pandering, and one count of receiving the earnings of a prostitute. He is being held on a $150,000 cash bond, and his trial is currently set for April 2026, the office said.
Arrest Near The Blade
Glendale police took Mitchell into custody at a Phoenix motel near 27th Avenue and Indian School Road, an area that has long been synonymous with prostitution and street-level trafficking. That stretch, often referred to as "the Blade," has previously been targeted in multi-agency sweeps known as "Operation New Beginning," according to FOX 10 Phoenix.
What Prosecutors Allege
Charging documents say the teenager told officers she had been staying with Mitchell in a motel room that was used for prostitution and that she left to seek help after he hit her, according to KTAR. Prosecutors also say an adult woman was rescued in connection with the case and that the alleged trafficking may have gone on for several months.
Advocates: Grooming Often Looks Like A Relationship
Victim advocates told Arizona's Family that traffickers often start out acting like a boyfriend, building trust and slowly cutting teenagers off from friends and family. That kind of grooming, they said, can make it much harder for young people to see the situation as coercive or abusive and to reach out for help.
Statewide Context And Resources
January is recognized as Human Trafficking Prevention Month in Arizona, and the Governor's Office of Youth, Faith and Family reports that the average age at which trafficking begins in the state is about 15.6 years old. The office lists the Arizona Human Trafficking Tip Line at 1-877-4AZ-TIPS for anyone who has information or needs assistance.
Legal Details
Child sex trafficking is classified as a Class Two felony and is designated a Dangerous Crime Against Children, according to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. The office also notes that criminal charges are only accusations and that Mitchell, like any defendant, is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
Mitchell remains in custody as prosecutors prepare for the April trial date. Authorities have asked anyone with information about the case or related activity to contact local law enforcement or the Arizona Human Trafficking Tip Line.
