The city of Davis once again pedals its way to the top, securing the Platinum-level Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) award from the League of American Bicyclists for the sixth consecutive year. This distinguished honor places Davis alongside Fort Collins, Colorado, and Madison, Wisconsin, as one of three U.S. cities recognized for their exceptional commitment to promoting cycling and building a robust biking culture.
According to the city's announcement, Davis's status as a trailblazer in bicycle friendliness is long-standing. It boasts of being the first city to receive the Platinum award in 2005 and has managed to retain this level of recognition without interruption since then. Not just a token of appreciation, the award reflects the city's deep-seated belief, and action towards making bicycling a convenient and safe mode of transport for its residents.
The BFC program, envisaged by the League, is a barometer for communities to measure and foster continued improvements in cycling infrastructure and culture. With more than 900 applications vying for acknowledgment in the program's history, Davis's consistent performance stands out even more prominently. In the latest award cycle, 79 communities joined or renewed their status, adding to the diverse tapestry of 444 Bicycle Friendly Communities that grace all 50 states including the District of Columbia.
By asking applicant cities to conduct surveys among their residents, the League ensures that the true voices of local cyclists are heard and accounted for. "Community input played an important role in the City receiving the Platinum award level this round and the City of Davis extends its sincere thanks to everyone who participated," the City of Davis stated.
