A Boston teen faces serious charges following an explosive incident at the State Street MBTA station, Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden's office reported in a statement. Charged with a litany of offenses including obstructing or endangering a railroad, larceny, and unarmed robbery, 19-year-old Addonis Reed of Dorchester, previously tangled with the law, now finds his bail set at $10,000 for this most recent case, where his prior cases' bail was revoked for 60 days.

On the night of January 14, around 11:20 p.m., Reed, along with four other juveniles, confronted another passenger whom they accused of taking their picture. After the passenger denied doing so, Reed escalated the situation, snatched the passenger's phone—MBTA security footage shows him smashing it into several pieces—and then compounded his actions by heaving the passenger's suitcase onto the train tracks, where it hit the third rail, caused a massive explosion, and ignited a fire. This forced police and firefighters to close the track, evacuate commuters, and suspend train service, Hayden said in an announcement released by the District Attorney's Office.

The victim, who supposedly carried over $3,000 worth of goods including two iPads, an Acer laptop, and other electronics, faced the terror of the altercation and the loss of his property, an ordeal Hayden described as alarming due to both "the fear that the victim must have experienced during the incident and the destruction of his property and subsequent station evacuation and shutdown in service," as noted by the District Attorney's Office. Reed will return to court on February 20 for a probable cause hearing and, in the meantime, must steer clear of the victim and all MBTA stations.
