Early morning commuters in Northwest Miami-Dade were met with an unexpected obstacle when a car plunged into a canal near the intersection of the Dolphin Expressway and the Florida Turnpike Extension. The incident, which occurred under heavy foggy conditions, prompted a swift response from emergency services. As CBS News Miami reported, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews and divers arrived on the scene to conduct a rescue operation after the vehicle was found submerged in the water this morning.
One person, who had managed to escape from the vehicle, was transported to a local hospital to receive medical treatment. The exact cause of the crash is still being investigated, and officials have not confirmed if the dense fog played a role in the incident. Nonetheless, WSVN captured footage of emergency crews working in limited visibility conditions, underscoring the poor driving conditions at the time of the accident.
The driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, was successfully rescued from the canal waters. First responders enveloped in the early morning fog were seen escorting the victim—a detail highlighted by WSVN, which also reported the woman wrapped in a white towel before she was taken away in a private ambulance. The current condition of the driver remains unknown, but she was taken to an area hospital for further evaluation.
As a result of the crash, the Florida Highway Patrol had to close the ramp that connects the westbound lanes of the Dolphin Expressway to the northbound lanes of the Turnpike Extension, causing delays in the area. A tow truck was called to retrieve the submerged vehicle from the canal. In light of the conditions, authorities urged motorists in the surrounding areas to drive with extra caution due to the heavy fog, which contributed to the perilous conditions on the road.
