An Easton, Massachusetts, woman has died following a house fire that broke out last night after responders were initially summoned for a medical emergency. According to a report by NBC10 Boston, the Easton Fire Department received a call around 9:23 p.m. regarding a medical incident at a North Main Street residence. However, the teams were unprepared for the blazing inferno they discovered, requiring swift action and additional support from neighboring fire departments.

The woman, whose identity has yet to be disclosed, was found deceased within the home. Easton Fire Chief Justin Alexander stated in an interview with NBC10 Boston, "On route we were told it was most likely a false alarm, upon arrival we found a structure fire was not called in that way." Emphasizing the seriousness of the situation, he added, "Our companies jumped into action, found heavy fire in the whole structure, and unfortunately we had an adult female deceased." The emergency crews were originally equipped for a medical response, not a structural fire, which posed an unexpected challenge.

The fire, which took about two hours to control, was fought by a coalition of firefighters from various towns, following a large regional response. The house's complex layout further complicated the firefighting efforts. Alexander noted, "The house layout was challenging. Very broken up, cut up house as far as the layout and created a lot of challenges for us inside," as noted by CBS News Boston. Despite these obstacles, the firefighters managed to tackle the blaze while preventing any additional injuries among their ranks, even after a brief mayday call was issued during the incident.

As the investigation into the cause of the fire proceeds, fire investigators remained on the scene early this morning, with the fire marshal's office leading the inquiry. Easton police had previously advised the public to steer clear of the North Main Street and Holmes Street area. The chief medical examiner’s office is charged with formally identifying the victim and determining the cause, and manner of her death. More details are expected as the investigations continue.
