An early morning traffic stop in El Paso turned volatile when a driver, now identified as Eduardo Garcia, 34, allegedly assaulted a deputy and tried to flee. According to a social media post by El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte, deputies pulled over Garcia on Friday for a traffic violation on the 6300 block of Arce Drive.
The events unfolded around 1:09 a.m. after deputies suspected Garcia of intoxication. He failed sobriety tests and was informed of an arrest for Driving While Intoxicated. At this point, Garcia reportedly became uncooperative, resisting handcuffing, and proceeded to assault a deputy by striking him multiple times before attempting an escape on foot.
Garcia was apprehended and faces charges including Driving While Intoxicated 2nd, Resisting Arrest, Search or Transport, Evading Arrest or Detention, and Assault on a Peace Officer or Judge. He is currently held at the El Paso County Detention Facility with a bond set at $14,500.
