The El Paso Zoo has stepped in to provide critical care for a lethargic bald eagle discovered near Silver City, New Mexico. Reported first to the Gila Wildlife Rescue, the eagle was transferred to the zoo's veterinary team for evaluation and treatment. As noted in the zoo's Facebook post, the bird is "extremely thin" and suffering from anemia, which has been causing noticeable weakness and fatigue. The post, cited by KTSM, explains the delicate balance needed when reintroducing food to an animal in such a weakened state to avoid further metabolic complications.
While the causes for the eagle's condition remain under investigation, the zoo's medical team is working to rule out infections like Avian Influenza and to check for toxic lead levels. KFOX-TV reports that blood samples and oral swabs from the eagle have been sent to a lab, with results still pending. In the meantime, the zoo's team is taking steps to cautiously nourish the bird back to health.
Amidst these rescue efforts, the zoo used the opportunity of this latest incident to underscore the success of its Raptor Rehabilitation Program, which, per their social media posts, has cared for 122 sick, injured, or orphaned wild birds of prey. The importance of the program is further highlighted by the careful attention given to the current bald eagle patient, with no broken bones found during the examination, as shared by KVIA.
