Zipps Sports Grill, a well-known restaurant chain across the Phoenix area, became the focus of a large-scale federal investigation on January 26th. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), along with other agencies, executed 15 search warrants at various Zipps locations as part of a months-long probe into suspected felony violations of federal law. The operation spanned 5 in Phoenix, 4 in Scottsdale, and several others across the Valley, including the company's Goldie's Sports Cafe.
The broad sweep forced customers to abandon their meals mid-bite as agents descended, carrying the authority of a federal judge who was convinced enough by the presented evidence to issue the warrants. A Zipps customer, recounting the day to KTAR News 92.3 FM, described the scene as "very sudden," with officials demanding an immediate halt to operations to investigate suspected identity theft, while taping off the restaurants' parking lots.
Outside several locations, including the one near 16th Street and Bethany Home Road and another near Central Avenue and Earl Drive, tensions escalated as crowds of protesters gathered and reportedly faced off against a SWAT team. Jacob Martinez, a protester at one of these locations, told KTAR News that agents began "shooting pepper balls" and "ramming their cars into people" in an echo of a recent violent incident involving law enforcement.
Arizona Rep. Yassamin Ansari joined demonstrators, highlighting that the community's reaction stems partly from a recent murder in Minnesota linked to ICE operations. "The community is feeling a lot of fear right now," Ansari said, in a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix. She added that the diverse crowd reflected a unified stance against the agency's presence in Phoenix. More information on the case is promised to be available after further evidence analysis, as HSI works to potentially lay charges based on the gathered evidence.
As for HSI, it identifies itself as a principal federal law enforcement body charged with defending the nation from global threats. According to the agency, the investigation is still ongoing and since it's in full swing, details released to the public remain on a need-to-know basis for now. Following the evidence's collection and review, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Arizona, HSI, and other federal law enforcement entities remain committed to protecting public safety and the rule of law.
