The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has stepped in to conduct an independent inquiry into an officer-involved shooting that occurred this past Sunday in Union City, as confirmed by a GBI press release. The incident left a 24-year-old man, Cameron Willis, from Atlanta, injured and under hospital care.
At approximately 7:35 p.m. on January 4, two officers from the Union City Police Department were dispatched following gunfire reports at an apartment on the 5700 block of Buffington Road. The officers confronted Willis, who was armed and subsequently wounded in the encounter. Having experienced stress-related symptoms, the involved officers were also examined at a hospital, despite suffering no physical injuries themselves.
The details surrounding the incident remain sparse. According to the preliminary report by the GBI, upon the officers' arrival, they faced Willis holding a handgun. The officers commanded him to drop the weapon; Willis then concealed it behind the door, subsequently stepping out without it—which is when the officers discharged their firearms, striking him.
Willis is currently receiving medical treatment for the wounds obtained during the shooting. Investigations by the GBI are ongoing and, upon completion, will be handed over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for a thorough legal assessment.
