What's cooking at this soon-to-be gargantuan lab, you ask? Once it's up and running in 2030, it will house roughly 800 staff members and merge five disjointed sites in Albany into one. These folks will have their hands full with a myriad of tasks, from disease surveillance to advancing biomedical research. And talk about location, location, location - the new spot will sit snugly on the W. Averell Harriman Campus in Albany, hand-in-hand with academic and bureaucratic collaboration opportunities. New York State Department of Health's Commissioner, Dr. James McDonald, highlighted the lab's future role in keeping their public health research sharp as a tack.
We're not just talking about any old lab here. This place is set to be a beacon of environmental health leadership, wastewater surveillance, and innovative diagnostic testing pipelines. It's not shy in its ambition to exceed federal standards, either, aiming to punch well above its weight as the leading Safe Drinking Water Act laboratory and a reference center recognized by federal agencies. Speaking of the diggers and cranes already on-site, the construction of this massive center is being championed by Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY), which is helming this "transformational" endeavor. They're joining forces with a design-build team that includes big names like Gilbane Building Company and Turner Construction Company, alongside architects from HOK. The designs boast of a five-story, 663,000 square foot laboratory, so expect some architectural eye-candy by the decade's end. "DASNY is proud to deliver this transformational $1.7 billion project for the Department of Health," DASNY President and CEO Robert J. Rodriguez stated, as per the Governor’s Office.
Several local and state officials have expressed support for the project. State Senator Patricia Fahy and Assemblymember John T. McDonald III noted the lab’s potential economic and employment impact in Albany. Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy also acknowledged the start of construction, citing a focus on sustainability, energy use, and efficiency.
The project represents an expansion of the Wadsworth Center, which has a 125-year history. The new laboratory is intended to update and strengthen the state’s public health infrastructure.
