Hazelwood's commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. drew a healthy crowd on Sunday night, as community members gathered to honor the legacy of the civil rights leader. Organized by the Hazelwood Community Enrichment Commission, the event was led by Dr. Kem Smith, who acted as Mistress of Ceremonies. GBC & Unfailing Love Music Ministry set the stage with their musical performances, creating an atmosphere of celebration and reflection.
According to an announcement shared by the City of Hazelwood’s social media, the evening featured powerful contributions from local talents. Ms. Morgan Jones, the Dr. King Oratory Contest Winner, gave a poignant speech that resonated with the audience. Ms. Tonecia Gamble performed an emotive praise dance, while Ms. Jenifer Williams provided inspiring words as the keynote speaker.
The event not only showcased artistic expression but also served as a conduit for the community to engage with Dr. King's enduring message of equality, peace, and unity. The City of Hazelwood expressed their gratitude towards attendees and participants, saying, "What an inspiring evening! A huge thank you to all who joined us."
Involvement by local figures was evident with acknowledgments to representatives of Ward 4 and Ward 7 – Hazelwood MO Lisa Matlock, Robert Smith, as well as Hazelwood Ward 8 and Hazelwood Ward 3 Neighbors Helping Neighbors groups, highlighting the collaborative effort underlying the commemorative event.
