In a significant drug bust by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Putnam County, more than 300 pounds of cocaine has been seized, as revealed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The seizure, part of an operation targeting illegal aliens involved in drug trafficking, led to multiple arrests. According to a statement by State Rep. Beau Baird (R-Greencastle), posted on the Indiana House Republicans website, the Republican representative praised the enforcement efforts and expressed his ongoing support for law enforcement's actions to protect the community and address immigration-related issues.
Baird underscored the importance of the operation by stating, "This operation is a critical reminder of the ongoing efforts to keep our communities safe from drug trafficking by criminal illegal aliens. The seizure of more than 300 pounds of cocaine demonstrates the hard work and dedication of Putnam County law enforcement, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. I will continue to support law enforcement's efforts to protect our district and hold criminal illegal aliens accountable," as noted by the same press release.
The operation seems to resonate with Baird's earlier political moves, including his backing of the Department of Homeland Security's "Worst of the Worst" website, which aims to identify and track high-priority illegal aliens involved in serious crimes. The representative's stance and actions align with the broader state and federal collaborative efforts to combat drug trafficking and enforce immigration laws more strictly.
Baird has been vocal about the need for engagement on these issues. Last year, he and his colleagues met, with national security experts Tom Homan and Chad Wolf to discuss strategies in which the state can further its partnership with federal agencies. During these briefings, they examined methodologies designed to bolster the enforcement of immigration statutes and maintain public safety.
